Restaurant Employee Scheduling Guide
Restaurants schedule differently than most businesses — two rushes a day, split shifts, and a kitchen and floor that both need covering separately. Here's how to approach it.
Separate kitchen coverage from front-of-house
Tag every worker by role so the schedule shows kitchen and front-of-house coverage independently — a fully staffed floor with an empty line is still an understaffed shift.
Build lunch and dinner as separate shifts
Rather than one long block spanning a slow afternoon, build lunch and dinner rushes as their own shifts — it matches how the floor actually runs and makes split-shift workers' days accurate.
Reuse your weekend pattern
Friday and Saturday dinner rarely change week to week. Set them up as recurring shift templates once instead of rebuilding your busiest shifts from scratch every week.
Handle call-outs before service starts
A line cook calling out an hour before service is a different problem than one calling out a day ahead. Either way, reassigning the shift directly and notifying the replacement immediately is faster than a round of phone calls.
